General Information
Dental health is the optimal form and function of all the interconnecting anatomical structures that make up the masticatory system... the teeth, gums and soft tissue, bone structure, muscles of mastication, salivary glands, jaw joint, palate, tongue, and lips. There are substances, chemicals, or foods that may be introduced into the oral environment that alters optimal dental health. There are medical conditions, medications, and treatments that may alter host resistance, or in fact directly interfere with optimal oral health. There are dental conditions that will interfere or aggravate medical conditions and there are now many direct correlations between dental health and whole body health. It is the job of the dental primary care provider to uncover and discuss each as part of every patient’s treatment plan.
